there's a bit of a standing desk meme going 'round right now. While in Copenhagen I had a nice desk that could be raised/lowered to allow working while standing, which I really liked. So with my engineer-dad's help I adapted a Geek Desk elevating base to a nice IKEA Galant desktop which works great and looks a lot better IMO than some of the other cobbled solutions for a standing desk.
The primary issue to address was the "L" shape of the desktop: a traditional desk base would result in poor support for the "wing" part of the desk and not be stable. So my dad came up with a nice solution using some scrap 2x4" lumber from the garage, plus a tap kit from the local hardware store that let us create a more-supportive extended base for the desktop while using the traditional floor stand.
This works great, except now the minimum height of the desk is a bit higher than normal so had to adjust my chair up a bit in the lowered position. Ultimately a better solution would be to keep a wood support for the extension but use < 1/4" plate steel for the mount which would provide the strength but allow the desk to drop lower.
