they've just finished the staircase up to the attic, and I'm really pleased with the way it is turning out: A large (40' x 14') open, brightly-lit space with great views.
The 4' square skylight on the north provides a nice view of the lake (and the Olympics, on a clear day) and it fills the stairwell (and 2nd floor hallway) with light.
Plus there will be 4 skylights on the south side (2 operable for ventilation) once they're done, so it should be a great "artist's garret" by the time they're done. Also a nice guest/loft space.
Jesse the designer had to adjust the stair plan a bit to make everything work, but it worked out great, with two landings and very comfortable steps.
We removed the doorway to the attic (and the bit of associated wall) so it feels like a vaulted space from the second floor... when you walk out of the master bedroom you're bathed in light from the skylight. It reduces some privacy but I think it will feel private enough for the occasional guest. We can always rough in a proper door later if need be.
Wow -- that's so cool! I love that space and the big window.

thanks Megan! My only fear is that once they put in the skylight it will cut off too much of the low part of the view, which is the interesting bit (lake, trees, rooftops) so I may ask them to drop it... again ... before the window arrives.
