the most perfect pop song ever written

hands down, is "(What's so funny 'bout) Peace, Love and Understanding?", performed by Elvis Costello but actually written by Nick Lowe.

It is perfect.  It has a message (the message) and lyrics that cry out from the soul.  It is passionately sung by Elvis and flawlessly performed by The Attractions, who were obviously inspired by the song when they recorded it.  It asks the question that every thoughtful person must ask themselves when confronted by the careless cruelty, the mendacity of the world. 

It takes the driving force of punk rock and directs it squarely at society, and at the same time back at itself, at the sneering cynics and fashionistas, and drives them from the temple. Stunning, and never equalled in the pop canon of "serious" songs/songs with a message.  Bless Nick Lowe, and Elvis, bless 'em.

I'm not actually drunk as I write this, although it might appear that way. This song just always puts an arrow straight through my heart.

FCK @ Parken

FCK, for those who don’t know or think it is something vulgar , is the name of the hometown Royal League football, club, F.C. København (Fuldbold Club København)

I arranged to go to the FCK – Esbjerg game with a few friends from work, and their kids – It was Malcolm’s first football game!

He did pretty well – clapping and cheering along with the crowd, taking in the spectacle, playing pinball before the match and eating two hot dogs – but we only made it 35 minutes into the game before he begged to go home.  Oh well.  I was happy to see Parken and at least part of a game for the first time.

I will take him again some time once he is a little older and see if we can sit through an entire 90 minute match.

 

 

BonBon Land

BonBon Land is an amusement park south of Copenhagen.  We visited there today along with other Microsoft DKers and their kids…

I think the best things about this amusement park are (a) its geared towards the little ones, 2–8 year-olds and (b) you pay at the gate and that’s it, all rides etc. are covered.

Malcolm really liked it although he spent a good part of the day pretending to drive a beat-up old electric park tram

and we went ‘round the pedal car ‘racktrack’ a few times but he doesn’t really get ‘steering’ yet, although the little Danish kids seem to!
