The Rude Skov (skov is woods/wood, rude is not what you think) is a large wood to the east of Birkerød and 1-2 km from our house. It's a 2nd/3rd growth wood so there aren't really any old growth trees to be seen (in fact I'm not sure there's any old growth forest at all left in Europe). That said it is quite pretty: A nice mix of decent-sized firs, birch (from which Birkerød gets its name) and various deciduious hard- and soft-wood trees.
There are many nice, fire road-sized roads through the wood, and if I'm following the maps correctly I can ride most of the way to work through the woods (on a mountain bike) once the weather warms up a little. In the meantime it is a very nice place to take Malcolm for a walk. As we watched Chronicles of Narnia on Friday we decided to search for Mr. Beaver's home and we kept an eye out for the White Witch, but all we saw were runners, mountain bikers, some people on horseback and a few walking their dogs.
The weather here in winter reminds me very much of New England. It gets cold, but not "midwest" cold, and never for very long. Last week we had a cold snap and the local lakes froze over. It reminded me of when I was a boy. When we had a cold snap like that I'd run down to the local pond as early as I could to check the ice to see if it was sufficiently strong and smooth for playing ice hockey. I had the urge to do the same here last week.
