(sung to the tune of "back in the saddle, again..")
I'm in SEA this wek for Meridian House-related stuff: Meeting with builders and my dad to go over plans and to review our design in the context of the neighborhood and see if the ideas make sense. Oh and also to see some frends, have some great seafood and return with a few christmas presents and various sundry items we cannot easily find in Copenhagen.
My first impression on return was how foreign it felt, even in the airport. It all seems very 'ad hoc' and disorganized compared to Europe. From the strange luggage handling "system" where you re-check your luggage and pick it up again after customs to the fleets of little courtesy vans instead of tidy queues of taxis, buses and integrated train in Copenhagen, it felt a little like Latin America or something. And then there's the overbearing security apparachiks, who took the extra time for our luggage to arrive to walk around the carousel and ask for papers and float pointed questions about what purchases, purpose of visit etc. Nice.
But then there's Green Lake/ Tangletown and I rememberd why we're coming back: a tangle of small streets and houses and shops, very European in scale, with warm inviting lights on this rainy night. And though it was raining, still warm enough for people to sit at outside tables at Zoka Coffee and watch the evening go by.
More house stuff this week over on the Meridian House blog.
